About the challenge
The challenge
It's all about getting people cycling and the challenge is to get as many people at your workplace to give cycling a go. Cycling is a great way to get fit and the Workplace Cycle Challenge could benefit your organisation through a happier and healthier workforce.
It's free to participate, and we're giving away prizes and awards to encourage people to get off their bums and onto a bike. Terms and conditions apply.
The Workplace Cycle Challenge is for new cyclists as well as established cyclists but we do have a special award for the organisation that gets the highest number of new cyclists to log their journeys.
The London Workplace Cycle Challenge runs from 1 June to 30 June 2009 and you can register now.
Getting started
To take part in the Workplace Cycle Challenge, simply register and join an existing team or create a new team. Download the guide for Team Leaders to learn more about the challenge and to understand what you need to do lead a team on the cycle path to victory!
You can check to see if someone from your organisation has already set up a team and then join it. You might also want to start a rival team if you're based at a different workplace or department!
If your organisation hasn't registered a team yet, you can set up a new team of your own. Once you have done this, you can start recruiting team members.
To help you recruit new team members, we have put together some tools:
Send this to your work colleagues to let them know about the challenge and the name of your team
Download and print this poster to hang in your office and create awareness of the challenge
Download and print this leaflet to go alongside the poster to remind your colleagues to register, and to tell them more about the challenge.
We have a limited number of printed posters and leaflets available on request, for those unable to print their own copies. To request printed posters and/or leaflets, email us at smartertravel@tfl.gov.uk stating the quantity you need, the name of your organisation and the address you would like them posted to. Please note these will be distributed on a first come first served basis subject to availability.
We understand that not everyone is a keen cyclist and you may never have even hopped on a bike before. We are encouraging those who fit this category to give the challenge a go with free tailored cycle training places for the first 150 people to register and call Cycle Training UK to claim their session.
If you are not able to physically cycle, but would like to participate in the challenge and be eligible for the free prize draws, you should keep track of the distance you travel each day (excluding when you are on public transport or in a car) and submit this information via the challenge website in place of cycle journeys.
How to participate
To take up the challenge and be in with a chance of winning, your organisation just has to get as many of its employees as possible to jump on a bike in June and log the trips that they make by bike on the cycle challenge website.
Simply log in to your account when the challenge starts on 1 June and record your miles. It's that easy!
Use this chart to help you keep track of your miles before logging them on the website.
